Agree 100% on needing a dedicated app. From what you and Daz have said in the past about the way the site is constructed, this may not actually be such an enormous undertaking as it might first seem, but it will be an undertaking nonetheless.

For laptop screen size, the issue for me was always just the number of wasted pixels drawing borders around everything, and forcing me to scroll within a sub-panel half the size of the screen. The site works fine, but just not efficiently in terms of visible useful area. Call it an aesthetic frustration, rather than a functional lack, on the netbook.

As for 2.2, it arrived at the end of this week, and I just checked the applebox site again. It gets further this time, I get the storefront splash page. Choosing the fairfield store now tosses a couple of missing method 'createNSResolver' exceptions.

Will paste the yui details from the phone in a sec..

Thanks for that!

Re screen size alone - the mobile space (as in phone) is something I'm going to have to leave for a while. We need a dedicated mobile app to properly work within those constraints of both screen real estate and browser power. However, laptops are something we've never had complaint of before? My little 13inch macbook gets handed around as our 5th access point on busy Saturday nights, and we've never hit problems. Down to an 11inch screen .. perhaps I need to buy the <a href="http://www.apple.com/au/macbookair/" rel="nofollow">11inch macbook air</a> to field test .. I'll run that past accounts :-). Any smaller though, and yeah, our catalogue layout isn't ideal.

Re the JavaScript errors you are seeing on your HPC Desire. You should be on Android 2.1 Whilst 2.2 is out I'm not sure if it's available to the Desire - with HTC's customisations of Android you'll get the latest OS updates on a delayed release cycle (<a href="http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1444382" rel="nofollow">http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1444382</a>). However .. I'm having trouble finding the browser specs for 2.1.

Can you do me a favour and navigate here: http://www.yahooapis.com/yui/3/examples/yui/yui-ua.html and tell me what it reports in the 'UA Properties set for your browser' section?

It's not a case of "mobile friendly" in the sense of adapting to smaller screen sizes, etc. I'd argue that, in that sense, the site is barely laptop friendly, certainly not netbook friendly, but that's a different discussion.

The app doesn't get that far to find such issues. It throws a bunch of JS exceptions after popping the overlay frame on the screen. HTC Desire. Happy to drop by and help debug sometime...

Yeah .. even though were all good now on webkit (desktop), unfortunately the site is not very mobile friendly. What device are you trying from?

Broken on Android, too... at least now I get to see some errors rather than a flat refusal. Perhaps it feels like progress :)

Don't underestimate the number of folks who might get the idea to browse and reserve a dvd on the train on the way home, for pickup when getting off at the station....
